The first time I traveled alone—without kids to manage, family to-dos waiting in the wings, or the pressure to be “on” for work—I felt something I hadn’t in years: spaciousness.
It was new. A little disconcerting even.

I woke up in a quiet hotel room with no alarm clock, no feet padding into my space, or kid trying to smush onto me… no emails pulling at my mind before the sun was up. I lingered over my coffee, wandered without a schedule around the beautiful hotel grounds, and sat by the serene pool with a book I didn’t need to read.
I didn’t need to poll the family for where we were going to eat… or have to cut anyone’s food into little pieces, or multi task the day’s schedule while I quickly shoveled some food in my mouth.
I even took a nap in the middle of the day.
For the first time in a long time, there was no one else’s needs dictating my pace.
